What Is Medication Management?

Medication management is a specialized psychiatric service that involves evaluating whether medication may be helpful for mental health conditions, prescribing appropriate medications, and monitoring their effectiveness over time. It is not about replacing therapy — it's about complementing it. For some individuals, therapy alone provides the relief they need. For others, medication can be a powerful tool that helps stabilize mood, reduce anxiety, improve focus, or manage symptoms so that therapy can be even more effective.

2

Psychiatric Evaluation Process

A psychiatric evaluation is the first step toward understanding what you're experiencing and finding the right path forward. During your appointment, Taneka will review your mental health and medical history, discuss current symptoms and life stressors, identify possible diagnoses, and recommend treatment options, including medication if appropriate. Her approach is evidence-based and collaborative, ensuring you are part of the decision-making process at every stage. Most evaluations take 60-90 minutes and can be conducted in person at our Newark office or via secure telehealth.

Who Can Benefit?

Medication management may be appropriate for individuals experiencing a range of mental health conditions. Our team carefully evaluates each person to determine whether medication is the right fit.

  • Anxiety disorders — when worry, panic, or fear significantly interfere with daily life
  • Depression — persistent sadness, low motivation, or difficulty functioning
  • ADHD — trouble focusing, impulsivity, or hyperactivity affecting school, work, or relationships
  • Mood disorders — including bipolar disorder and mood instability
  • OCD — intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviors that disrupt daily routines
  • PTSD and trauma-related symptoms — when trauma responses remain intense despite therapy
  • Sleep disturbances — chronic insomnia or sleep issues tied to mental health conditions

How It Works at CCD

Our medication management process is designed to be thorough, transparent, and collaborative at every step. Our psychiatric services integrate seamlessly with our therapeutic counseling services, allowing for coordinated care when both medication management and therapy are needed.

  • Initial Evaluation — A comprehensive 60-90 minute psychiatric assessment to understand your history, symptoms, and goals
  • Collaborative Planning — We work with you (and your therapist, if applicable) to develop a treatment plan that may or may not include medication
  • Medication Trial — If medication is recommended, we start with the lowest effective dose and monitor closely
  • Ongoing Monitoring — Follow-up appointments every 4-6 weeks to assess effectiveness, adjust dosages, and address any side effects
  • Integrated Care — Taneka communicates directly with your therapist to ensure seamless, coordinated treatment
  • Convenient Scheduling — Appointments Monday through Friday, with some evening and weekend times available. New patients are usually seen within 2-3 weeks

Our Approach to Medication

We believe medication should never be the first or only answer. At CCD, we take a conservative, evidence-based approach. We prescribe only when clinically appropriate, always starting with the lowest effective dose. We prioritize open communication — you'll always understand why a medication is being recommended, what to expect, and how we'll monitor progress together. Our goal is to help you or your child feel better, function better, and eventually determine whether medication remains necessary.

For Parents: What to Expect

We understand that the idea of medication for your child can feel overwhelming. Our team takes the time to answer every question, explain the reasoning behind recommendations, and involve you in every decision. You are a partner in your child's care — not a bystander. We'll discuss potential benefits, risks, and alternatives so you can make an informed choice that feels right for your family.
