
You’ve probably heard the buzz about the new programs we’re offering–Summer Therapy Academies. Here’s all of the scoop:
The Summer Therapy Academies will be like camp, only better. Each academy will be facilitated by trained mental health professionals and targeted to children with specific concerns. Our objective is to teach skills and reinforce positive coping skills. We will use evidence based materials, work with children in groups and offer support to parents. Our focus is on providing intensive services in order to help children who are struggling in certain areas of their lives. Slots will be limited in order to assure that participants get what they need in order to be successful.

Here’s the list of academies:
Beat your anxiety Rebecca Roebke, LCSW

–Children 8-12 and 13-16
Academy will meet 2 x per week from 9-11 for a four week period
Participants: children who struggle with anxiety including but not limited to separation anxiety, generalized anxiety, OCD behaviors, and panic attacks.
The academy will help decrease anxiety symptoms and increase children’s ability to manage their anxiety through the use of appropriate coping strategies. Children will participate in group sessions and have individual support provided by a professional therapist.
Group sessions will include and focus on :
Identifying anxiety and anxiety triggers
Using cognitive behavioral therapy to change and manage unhealthy thoughts
Relaxation skills and overall stress reduction
Teaching mindfulness
Increasing self esteem and self confidence
Through the academy children will learn how to identify when they are anxious and how to use techniques to manage those feelings.
Each participant will receive snacks, a mindfulness coloring book, a journal, and all the materials during the academy sessions needed to create a relaxation kit for use at home.
July 26th and July 27th weekly until August 10 and August 11th
Attention deficit / behavior academy —Rebecca Roebke, LCSW
Children 8-12 and 13-16
Academy will meet 2 x per week from 9-11 for 3 weeks
Participants : children who struggle with behaviors at home or in school as a result of poor impulse control, hyperactivity, lack of attention to detail, poor listening and communication skills.
The academy will focus on helping children to develop better impulse control through learning emotional literacy skills, developing positive communication skills, learning coping strategies to manage hyperactivity, and developing good problem solving skills
Group sessions will focus on:
Mindfulness
Impulse control
Coping skills
Relaxation skills
Problem solving
Communication and social skills
Emotional literacy
Each participant will receive a journal, snacks, and handouts to take home on various skills as well as any materials needed during the academy related to the goals above.

July 5th and 6th weekly until July 19th and 20th
Behavior Management Academy–LaVante’ Dorsey, LCSW

BMA will meet two days per week Monday’s and Wednesday’s 9am-12pm and 4pm-7pm for 3 weeks. Starting June 27 to July 11th.
Participants: Children who struggle with verbal and physical aggression, anger management, identifying triggers, defiance, utilizing coping skills and verbalizing emotions. BMA will assist in improving participant interaction with peers and authority figures. We will educate children on emotional literacy, developing coping skills, goal setting and self-esteem building.
Participants will engage in group and individual therapy sessions.
Group sessions will focus on improving self-esteem, learning new appropriate behaviors, verbalizing emotions, understanding others perspectives, and appreciating the impact of their own behaviors on others.
BMA will seek for children to begin to accept responsibility for their behaviors, decrease physical and verbal aggression, improve their ability to express emotions and increase self-esteem.

Weight management academy for children ages 8-12 and 13-16 years old
Academy will meet two days a week from 9-noon and run for a three week period.
Participants:
Children who struggle with weight issues, low self-esteem, poor self-confidence and body image problems.
This academy will help to improve participants relationship with food. We will educate children on healthy eating, good nutrition and how to make simple changes to manage their weight.
Children will participate in peer group sessions and have individual support facilitated by a professional therapist.
Group sessions will focus on:
Self-confidence building
Improved self-esteem
nutritional counseling
self-love and acceptance
We hope that this program will empower children to take control of their health, decrease their risk of being bullied, learn better coping skills and most importantly, improve their self-esteem.
Each participant will receive a Fitbit and will be encouraged to set movement goals. Additionally, participants will have access to an online portal where they can log their food intake and interact with the nutritionist and their counselor.
Dates : June 29th and June 30th, July 6 and July 7th, July 13th and July 14th
Cost for each participant to be paid before the Academy starts:
300.00 per child
Includes:
all group sessions
all individual support session–as needed
online access to secure portal to log food and water intake
(3) weekly online coaching with assigned counselor.
Nutritional consultation and education
Participants will also have the option of purchasing additional services after the academy is finished.

The strong girls academy is designed to help girls to develop healthy self esteem, achieve self acceptance and confidence. During each session the participant will learn positive self talk, how to identify and combat negative thought patterns, and learn healthy coping strategies. Girls will participate in peer group sessions and have individual support facilitated by a professional therapist.
Participants-Two separate groups will be held for girls ages 11-13 and 14-16 who suffer from low self esteem, lack confidence and self acceptance.

Middle School Preparation Academy–Dr. Kietra Winn

Transitions are a natural part of life but can be a challenge for children entering middle school. The changes in routine, school location, teacher expectations as well as the changes due to puberty is the prime opportunity for stress and anxiety in the first year of middle school. The numerous changes often lead to decreased self-esteem, increased stress and anxiety which often impacts how the child performs academically. The Middle School Preparation Academy is designed for children who will be transitioning into 6th grade in fall 2016. The goal of this academy is to prepare children who are anxious about the transition to middle school. During the sessions children will learn anxiety management, stress reduction strategies, and assertive communication. Children will participate in peer group sessions that are facilitated by a professional therapist.
Participants: Youth who completed 5th grade during the 2015-2016 school year and will be entering 6th grade at a local middle school fall 2016.
Time: 4:30-6:00 Thursdays
Date: August 4-18
Cost: $360 (includes 3 week group session, 1 family session, 2 individual sessions)
High School Preparation Academy–Dr. Winn
Transitions are a natural part of life but for youth entering high school increased demands from parents and teachers can impact academic performance. In addition to changes in routine, school location, and teacher expectations, youth in this age group also face societal expectations of career planning after high school. The pressure to perform and mature can ultimately increase anxiety and diminish self- esteem in youth in this age group. The High School Preparation Academy is designed for youth who will be transitioning into 9th grade in the fall 2016. The goal of this academy is to prepare youth who are anxious about the transition to high school. During the sessions youth will learn anxiety management, stress reduction strategies, goal setting and assertive communication. Youth will participate in peer group sessions that are facilitated by a professional therapist.
Participants: Youth who completed 8th grade during the 2015-2016 school year and will be entering 9th grade at a local high school fall 2016.
Time: 4:30-6:00 Tuesdays
Date: August 2-16
